Bootstrapping a brain

As most of you my have noticed so far, this being an extremely pompous statement, I have recently changed occupation and gone back to university to do a PhD. For that move there are many motivations. I will not delve into those, but I do dare in this post ask a question which I would appreciate if any one cared to provide an answer to.

How do you kick start a brain back into its original shape? I remember a time in which after reading an academic article it would stick for centuries. Now that sort of quick recording mechanism is not there. Any tips on how to build that up again?

Now for memory it holds there, but there has to an deep understanding of it. I was never one to pass exams through memorizing, but that was more out of laziness than anything else. Now on the other side the last 5 years in Industry have taken the laziness away. Mostly through kicks in the but.

So now the challenge is, how to find working and learning strategies that will enable me to get to the level required. The last part of the statement is not without issues. Obviously as Tom Waits would say success in ones own terms is a hard thing to define. Well in this case you have peer review but I am still not sure if that is not equally fuzzy.

Anyhow I am at least enjoying the new intellectual challenges that are showing up on the horizon, but I am still figuring out what strategies I should use to surmount them.

Any ideas out there? Any pointers welcome.

Thanks for reading and I will try and blog some more in the next few years. 4 at least.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees. Back where things feel like they belong.

First day as a PhD s

First day as a PhD student was relaxing. Good... that's the way it was meant to be.
